FAQ: Member Submitted Closed Captions System
Posted by franklinMember Submitted Closed Captions System
Closed captions typically display a transcription of the audio portion of a program as it occurs (either verbatim or in edited form), sometimes including non-speech elements. --Wikipedia
What is the Member Submitted Closed Captions System?
This new addition is a complete Caption Creation System that allows any member of trueGOD.tv to create, edit, save, retrieve and submit a caption in their own language, which upon review is approved and translated into over 60 languages using the best online caption technology currently available.
This system is a first for the web. No site currently has such a system.
This utilizes a number of current technology parts to achieve this system. Few sites have Closed Captions, even fewer can do multiple languages. Far less can do the number we can produce on every caption submitted. And none have a member system that can allow trusted members to submit captions on previously uploaded videos. This God inspired system is a first for the web, and trueGOD Television has been blessed to release it to the world for the expansion of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
What is the process on creating Closed Captions?
Simple, first Join if you are not a member.
Second log in
Then find the video you want to add a caption to.
Click on the +CC button below the video window. It is to the right of the title of the video.
I you do not see a +CC then the caption has already been created and submitted for review. Or a small CC is on the video window on the lower right. That means it already has a caption.
You cannot add a caption to a video that has one, or replace an existing caption.
If the +CC is there, after clicking on it you will see 2 windows expand, to the right is the instructions, below is the caption system.
The video will automatically restart at the beginning, the controller will not auto-hide, but will remain on the video during this session. You will need the controller to pause, stop, start and backup the video as you create the caption.
To begin, click on the Start Clock on the right side at the first words that are spoken on the video, you may need to back up and start again to get it to the right point. You can also pause the video just before the first words, then click the Start Clock.
Here is what you are trying to do, Set the [Start Time] Enter the text spoken [End Time].
So you will click Start clock first, then start the video, typing the words spoken. Stop the video after just 3-10 words, type all of your text, then click End Clock. This will set the end of that text as it appears on the screen. You will repeat the process for the next words, Start Clock, text and End Clock. Notice the Start time is on a new line. You may have to scroll down to see the time and enter the text correctly.
You can preview your work at any time to see how it looks. The preview will only be in your language. You will not see a preview in translated languages. Make sure you have a complete phrase done with start and end times before clicking Preview.
You can save your caption as you are working on it. This will store the caption for 48 hours. Captions that are not completed and submitted before 48 hours are automatically deleted. There is not a retrieval process on deleted captions. Sorry.
Once your caption is completed you can preview it or submit it. If you preview, don't forget to submit. It is not complete until it has been submitted for review and your hard work will be lost if you forget to submit the caption.
Once submitted no one can add a caption to the same video again. We will review the caption and approve, edit or delete caption. If the caption is rejected, then the video will be available for captions to be submitted.
Members info is tracked and added to your submission. First so we can give you credit for your efforts in spreading the gospel. Second, so we can track members who may abuse the system.
Once approved, videos will be available in the total number of languages that we can translate to at that time. So the number of languages will increase and so will your ministry impact!
What are some suggestions to watch out for while doing Closed Captions?
Use short sentences that will fit across the screen, some languages are more verbose than others. So if it is 10 words in English may be 14 in Spanish.
Use sentence case at all times. Only capitalize the First letter of a sentence and proper names. Translation software will not translate correctly text with a lot of capital letters.
“But I want to let them know IT WAS A BOLD STATEMENT!” Sorry, let the audio and video do the job of emphasis, your goal is to communicate the text neutrally, that way the software can do a good job of translating it.
Try not to edit the time in the start and stop areas that are entered by the Clock icons. If the time is wrong, delete and get the video to the right spot, pause and click the Clock icon then. This will help you produce a successful Closed Caption.
Check with Preview. It will appear the same way that it will with the Preview as far as timing is concerned. You cannot change typestyle or format of text. So watch the text length.
How long does it take to create a caption?
It takes about 3 times the length of the video to create a caption. So a 5 minute video will take you 15 minutes to create. And hour long sermon may take 3 hours to produce. On music videos we suggest getting the lyrics first so you can just copy and paste, instead of typing it all. The same process will speed up the work on other videos that have existing transcripts.
How long does the approval process take after a new Close Caption has been submitted?
We do not have a large staff, to it could take a few hours to a few days. If you do not see your caption after a day, send us an email. If it is a long video we will need time to watch the entire video while reviewing.
Can you check info submitted in other languages?
Yes we can translate and check the text of most captions directly in our admin area. So captions submitted in other language can be reviewed as well.
Can I save my caption while working on a long video?
Yes you can Save, log out, log back in and Load your previously entered caption. Make sure you Load before saving. So you do not save a blank caption over you hard work. You have 48 hours to complete and submit your caption.
Will you create my captions for me for free?
Sorry, we will create some captions for some content providers at our discretion. But we cannot provide caption creation services for free. To find our the cost of the service, please check our catalog.
Can I have a copy of the files that make up the captions?
Possibly, are looking into the value of selling a complete set of captions once created. We would only see captions of those we have contracted with to create directly. Member created, contributed captions will not be for sale or downloadable.
Can I use your Captions on other sites?
No, we do not provide caption services for other sites. Sorry.
Do I need to translate my videos first?
No, that is the power of the system, not only you can add a caption in the language it was produced in. We can replace, correct and update captions once they have been created.
Can anyone add a caption to my video?
Yes, this leverages the power of the community to add languages to your ministry that you may not have the labor to provide. All captions are review for accuracy and corrected if needed before approval and translation.
Who provides the translations?
Google, World Lingo, BabelFish and others online free translation services.
How may languages are the Closed Captions translated into?
With our initial launch we can do 63 languages. We are working on display issues on right to left reading languages currently. We want to have 75 languages available by the end of 2011.
